Apparently it's a prequel of sorts...

VUGames now have a page for the new game, The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning, which has some info about the game but unfortunately no pictures or screenshots yet.

Quote:
Level Up to Feel the True Power of the Purple Dragon! The Legend of Spyro shifts in game design and now focuses on action/combat and character growth/customization. Unleash devastating fury attacks, new melee and aerial combo attacks or use one of Spyro's many new breath abilities to defeat foes. Feel the power of the purple dragon as players have the control to upgrade Spyro's breath attacks and moves to their liking. It's a new beginning with a storyline that will serve as a prequel to all of the existing Spyro titles, the narrative will explore Spyro's origin for the 1st time and the game includes AAA voice talent from Elijah Wood, David Spade and Gary Oldman.

Whilst the VUGames website only has a page for a PlayStation 2 version, according to the game's ESRB entry the game will appear on GameCube, PlayStation 2 and the Xbox. Incidently the game is rated 'Everyone 10+ (Cartoon Violence)'.

David Spade!? Gary Oldman!? How did vivendi universal manage to get these well known celebs to do voices for spyro? Oh, and Elijah wood(Frodo) will make an excellent new spyro voice.

Huh. I still miss Spyro's old voice actor though, the one that did his voice for the PS1 games. Still, this is interesting. I'm not sure what to make of this whole 'customization/exploring Spyro's origin' thing. Upgrading Spyro's breath attacks and moves was pretty much what you could do in Shadow Legacy.

Cartoon violence, huh? As far I remember, the earlier games were always rated for Comic Mischief. That's interesting.

....Hate to be the nerd here but it sounds sooooooo awesome! This sounds great, that voice talent sounds totally awesome and a prequel! Still sounds like my game idea I posted on the VUG Forums, but I'm sure it isn't like the game I intended to send them to make! Oh, I cannot wait until E3 or whenever they show screens from it! I hope, as I did with 'A Hero's Tail', and as I did with 'Shadow Legacy' that this game brings Spyro back on top and makes him a big name in videogames again and noone will hate Spyro anymore! So this IS "Spyro: Legend", right? Either way, sounds so awesome, is anyone else as excited as me!?!?!

OMG! You are right! That'd be so cliche and dumb, I always pictured Red as being the top dragon elder for years until his power made him greedy and he had a huge fallout resulting in his banishment. But what could Spyro's parents have been doing all these years? We will most likely see the origins of Sparx.

Hopefully they don't screw it up and have Elora, Hunter, Bianca and all them in it as Spyro's allies, 'cause then that wouldn't make sense, he met them later, so they cannot be in the prequel AT ALL! If they screw that up then they honestly didn't think the game thru at all!

This game sounds good, but I am still worried. I hope vivendi universal listened to what critics hated about a hero's tail and try to avoid those things for this game. I'm not buying it if it has the same autosave glitch the last game had. Also, I hope they make it as original as possible. Maybe we'll finally see why Gnasty Gnorc was banished to Gnasty's world.

No that dragon is named Papa, but that does not mean it is his father. Insomniac said in an interview the dragon in the back of the first game booklet was not an older version of Spyro nor his dad, but then on the DNN site Insomniac called him "Papa Dragon".

dark52 - I went a little nutso posting it, sorry. On IMDB, WikiPedia, IGN, NeoSeeker, Nintendo Forums, GameFaqs, Spyro Fan's Anonymous...and more. Sorry, I did take your info. word for word and didn't link back to you, I wasn't really thinking about it. On WikiPedia your site is listed but none of the others. Next time I'll link to you, you aren't mad are you?

Aeravys - No, Ted Price of Insomniac said that wasn't meant to be an older Spyro, or his dad, just some other purple dragon.

Wow, they'll have cleanup to do then. They deleted the "Spyro 6" topic on their forums. But now what? They have all those other sites I put it on. Either that was a false print ( someone lied, God I hope not) or someone made a mistake and spilled the beans early...or befoe David, Elijah and Gary confirmed their voice acting.

I wonder what the heck is going on that made them want to delete it!!!???!!!???!!!

Don't we already know a bit about Spyro's past? I know the japanese game had a little comic in their manual about how they found Spyro. There were two blue egg-thieves, one carrying a dragon egg, the other a dragonfly egg. The Elders stopped them, and they ran away leaving their eggs behind. The dragon egg started to glow and was hot, as if there was fire inside, and both eggs hatched at the same time. Spyro was named so because he was able to breath fire inside his egg, and Sparx was bonded to Spyro because they were born at the same time.

At least I think that's it. The comic pages are somewhere...

I do suppose that having the old voice character in this would ge pretty awsome. There was also something I really liked in the first game that Insomnioc cut out in the others were Spyro can roll on his side by hitting L1 and R1. I simply loved rolling since it was how I dogded the bullets in 1 of the last levels. I hope they put that back in.smilieWhen first heard of this prequal game, I thought it was another dream come true. But There's also a problem that since its of Spyro's past, he won't be able to us the current weapons of his that we are all acustum 2, like headbash, wingshield and our most favorite of ours, duoble jump... which was only in 1 game:Spyro A Hero's Tail. There is nothing I have againstthis new game... It is that I only want all of you to know even thou that In the misdth of all our excitment, (for I Know how u feel) never raise your to high so that if the game is not as we all expeted... We won't all ditch Spyro all at once like: Spyro enter the Dragonfly, as I have heard from many (and I do agree with them since I own it myself) stinks.smilieWe can all be excited at times and tell our friends of the good news that God allowed to happen, but we should overexert ourselfs to only be dissapionted if God had other plans on mind.smilie It has been a long time since I played Spyro when suddenly a friend of mind said he hade bought Spyro Year of the Dragon. Suddenly, I was once agian a Spyro fan and master. I played a compitition with my friend to see if either the boy who know nothing of PS1 or if the old master could finish the game first. In the midths of the excitment I relized how lonly it is to play only by yourself, and I soon know what a Spyro game really needed... a 2 player game.It was always my dearest ambition to pick up a phone and call the current people who were making a New Spyro game and tell them this. But because of current nightmares of school and homework, I was unable to. It is with all my heart that they will turn this to a 2 player game. And with the conclucion of this commentry that this new game will fullfill your dreams and satisfy u in any way possible.

Yep, the Japanese Spyro manual did indeed have that, and you can see it at Mozepy's Spyro Universe website.

Perhaps they will stay true to that and perhaps not, who knows.

It would be nice if they did, or at least didn't deviate too much. Perhaps we can hear a bit about where Spyro's egg was and how it got into the clutches of those blue thieves (and why his egg specifically, if they were being deliberate about it)

To silvertwighlight, thanx, i didn't know about the japanese origins, so i can stop asking now.

Why david spade would be in a video game that hasn't been doing so good on teh console eludes me...Is Vivendi sure they have all these awesome actors on their side?

I wish tom kenny could come back and be spyro's voice, but he's got like seventy different parts on thirty different cartoon shows.

Does nebody else here wish that stewart copeland would do the music again?...sigh...The AHT music was not as cool. That one theme was overused...
